Sponsorship

The Silver Society Belgium seeks to support initiatives that contribute to the study, appreciation and development of Belgian silversmithing.
The Society may sponsor projects relating to the work of young Belgian silversmiths, research into Belgian silver, past or present, or initiatives that promote a deeper appreciation of the artistic, historical and cultural significance of the craft.In this way, we hope to help preserve Belgium’s rich silver heritage, encourage new talent and further the recognition and appreciation of Belgian silversmithing.

In 2008 the TSSB sponsored the publication of two books:

2023 - Project “De Frietvork”

In 2023, the TSSB donated one kilogram of pure silver to the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp, enabling students to participate in a project entitled “De Frietvork” under supervision of silversmith Anja Baelus. The project challenged the students to design and create silver forks meant for eating Belgium’s favourite food: frites.

Cast object

Students cast their own design by pouring molten silver from the melting crucible into the pouring channel of the mold.
As you can see the cast is often of a rough quality which needs further refining to aquire the desired detail and finish.

Creating an alloy of pure silver beads and copper
The correct alloy is created by weighing 925 parts of pure silver per 1000 parts and adding 75 parts of pure copper per 1000 parts and placed in a melting crucible.

Delft Casting Technique
Students creating casting molds using the Delft Casting Technique with their prepared models.
The oily sand mixture is compacted, then their model is impressed into the top layer of sand in the bottom ring of the casting mold. Then an additional ring is added on top and filled with extra Delft sand and the sand is compacted to achieve maximum definition of the cast.
Air channels and a pouring channel are created to allow safe casting and venting of the hot alloy.The two rings are separated and the model is removed from the mold, the rings are joined back together, leaving an empty space that is ready to receive the molten silver alloy.

Books

In 2026, the TSSB contributed to the publication of the book “Schitterende Hoop in Barre Tijden” by Robert de Koning, dedicated to a 19th-century Belgian Neo-Gothic religious work of art.
